Tone deafness, also known as amusia, is the inability to distinguish between musical notes and recognize pitch differences. People who are tone deaf have difficulty recognizing when a note is out of tune or off key, and may have trouble singing or playing musical instruments. This condition is usually considered to be a developmental disorder, and it is estimated that approximately 4% of the population is tone deaf. While tone deafness is generally genetic, it can also be caused by damage to the brain or hearing pathways. Treatment for tone deafness may include music therapy, cognitive training, and voice coaching.
